DOJ Charges Vietnamese National in $16M Crypto Scam as…

U.S. prosecutors have charged a Vietnamese national with money laundering over an alleged cryptocurrency “pig butchering” scheme in which one victim transferred about $16 million to a purported investment platform called “Triangle,” while investigators traced more than $53 million linked to U.S. fraud schemes through wallets attributed to the defendant.Trung Nguyen Van, 37, faces two money-laundering counts in a criminal complaint filed in the Western District of Missouri and unsealed after his initial federal court appearance in Los Angeles, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said Friday.

The charges are accusations and have not been proven at trial.

How Did a $16 Million Victim Lead Investigators to a $53 Million Wallet Trail?

According to the affidavit supporting the complaint, the identified victim transferred roughly $16 million in cryptocurrency between June and August 2024 after believing the funds were being invested through Triangle.

Investigators traced more than $569,000 from the victim to a wallet attributed to Van on Aug. 7, 2024. Two days later, the wallet allegedly received six transactions totaling about $569,569 that were also traceable to the victim. Prosecutors said approximately $567,999 was then moved through four transactions to an unhosted cryptocurrency wallet.

The broader wallet history is substantially larger. Prosecutors allege that wallets linked to Van received about $53.28 million in crypto assets connected to wire-fraud schemes targeting U.S. citizens between Feb. 9, 2018, and Dec. 17, 2024. Approximately $53.19 million was subsequently transferred onward to other accounts.

Authorities also identified multiple U.S.-based victims who reported millions of dollars in combined losses to separate investment schemes. The suspicious wallets associated with those cases allegedly transferred cryptocurrency to Van’s wallet.

What Was the Alleged Role of the Triangle Platform?

Prosecutors say the victims described a recurring pattern despite being directed to different websites. Individuals they met online allegedly encouraged them to invest cryptocurrency through specified platforms while promising high financial returns. They later found themselves unable to withdraw their money.

The structure closely resembles other relationship-based investment scams in which fake trading platforms display balances or profits while the victim’s real cryptocurrency moves into wallets controlled by a fraud network. U.S. Attorney R. Matthew Price said these schemes have become increasingly sophisticated and have caused billions of dollars of losses globally.

The current case does not establish that Van operated Triangle itself. The publicly released allegations focus on his claimed role in receiving and moving cryptocurrency linked to the fraud.

How Large Has the Pig-Butchering Problem Become?

The case arrives weeks after the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network published new data showing the scale of digital-asset investment scams. FinCEN said financial institutions filed 33,904 Bank Secrecy Act reports involving suspected digital-asset investment scam activity between September 2023 and the end of 2025, representing approximately $12.7 billion in suspected financial activity.

U.S. authorities have increasingly combined criminal prosecutions with blockchain tracing and asset seizures. What Happens to the Allegedly Laundered Crypto?

The Missouri announcement does not state that the $53 million attributed to Van’s wallets has been seized, frozen or recovered. That distinction matters because tracing funds on a blockchain does not mean authorities still have access to them.

Crypto can move rapidly through additional wallets, exchanges and conversion services, leaving recovery dependent on where assets ultimately arrive and whether investigators can obtain cooperation or legal control over them.
