Binance Pay Launches USDT Payments at Millions of…

Binance Pay has launched USDT payments across PayPay-supported merchants in Japan, giving eligible users a way to spend the dollar-linked stablecoin at millions of locations through one of the country’s largest cashless-payment networks.

The integration significantly expands the real-world footprint of Binance’s crypto payment service in Japan by connecting it with PayPay’s existing merchant acceptance infrastructure.

Users pay through Binance Pay using USDT, while participating merchants continue receiving settlement through the conventional PayPay system. That distinction means Japanese shops do not need to hold USDT, manage crypto wallets or independently integrate blockchain infrastructure.

Instead, the cryptocurrency is converted as part of the payment process, allowing the merchant side of the transaction to remain denominated in Japanese yen.

The arrangement effectively uses Binance Pay as the crypto-facing payment layer and PayPay’s established network as the merchant-facing infrastructure.

USDT Reaches PayPay’s Merchant Network

PayPay has developed one of Japan’s largest QR-code payment ecosystems since its launch in 2018 and is accepted at millions of merchant locations spanning convenience stores, restaurants, retailers and other businesses.

Connecting Binance Pay to that network avoids the difficult process of persuading individual Japanese merchants to directly integrate cryptocurrency payments.

For consumers, the experience is designed to resemble an ordinary QR-code transaction. The user selects Binance Pay and funds the transaction using eligible USDT, while the underlying conversion handles the transition from the dollar-denominated stablecoin into the local payment system.

USDT, issued by Tether, is the world’s largest dollar-linked stablecoin by circulating supply. Its relatively stable dollar value makes it more practical for payments than cryptocurrencies whose prices can move substantially between the initiation and settlement of a purchase.

However, describing the rollout as millions of Japanese merchants directly “accepting USDT” would overstate what has changed.

The merchants remain part of PayPay’s existing acceptance network. The integration provides a mechanism through which crypto held by a Binance Pay user can fund a transaction that ultimately reaches the merchant through conventional payment rails.

Binance Expands Crypto’s Payment Use Case

The Japanese rollout fits Binance’s broader effort to position cryptocurrency as a payment instrument rather than exclusively a trading asset.

Binance Pay is a wallet-based payment service that allows users to send and receive supported cryptocurrencies and make payments without relying on a conventional card transaction for the crypto leg.

Japan is a particularly significant market for such an expansion because cryptocurrency exchanges and related services operate within a comparatively developed regulatory framework overseen by the Financial Services Agency.

Binance re-entered the Japanese market through its acquisition of Sakura Exchange BitCoin and subsequently launched Binance Japan in 2023 as a locally regulated operation.

Stablecoin regulation has also evolved significantly in Japan. Legal changes created a framework for permitted stablecoins and intermediaries while imposing requirements around issuance and distribution to Japanese users.

The PayPay integration therefore illustrates how crypto payments may expand without requiring retailers themselves to become cryptocurrency businesses.

For Binance, that model offers a substantially larger addressable merchant base than establishing direct crypto-payment relationships store by store.

For PayPay merchants, meanwhile, the customer can fund a purchase from digital assets while the merchant continues operating through familiar payment and settlement infrastructure.

The development does not mean USDT has replaced yen at participating Japanese stores, nor does it turn every PayPay merchant into a direct Tether counterparty.

Its significance is instead at the payment interface: USDT held by eligible Binance Pay users can now be converted into spendable purchasing power across PayPay’s enormous existing Japanese merchant network, substantially broadening the stablecoin’s practical reach without requiring merchants to handle cryptocurrency themselves.
